Building a Pool, Step by Step: From First Visit to Final Walkthrough

"How long will this take?" is right behind "how much does it cost?" on the list of questions we get asked at every first visit. Here's what actually happens, phase by phase.

Step 1: Free Site Visit

We come to your property in person — the owner, not a salesperson — to review the site, discuss your vision, and talk through options and budget. This is also when we get a first read on anything that could affect cost or timeline: access for equipment, existing hardscape, drainage, and property lines.

Scheduling a visit depends mainly on your own availability rather than a fixed turnaround on our end — we work around your schedule and can usually get on the calendar quickly once you reach out.

Step 2: Design & Permitting

We finalize the design and finishes with you, then handle every city and county permit in-house — including DERM and drainage review where it applies.

This is usually the longest single phase, and it's mostly out of our hands: it depends on your city's review queue and whether your lot triggers additional review. Depending on the institutions involved, permitting can take anywhere from 15 days to 2 months. Recent regulations have also made review stricter — particularly for excavations deeper than 2 feet — which can add time to the process.

Step 3: Construction

Once permits are approved, we take the project on ourselves, with the owner checking in through every phase. Construction generally moves through:

Excavation and layout, steel and plumbing rough-in, gunite/shell application, a curing period before decking and finishes go in, and equipment installation and startup.

Construction typically takes 3 to 5 months, depending on your city and its permitting requirements, weather, and holiday periods or vacation schedules that can pause work along the way.

Step 4: Final Walkthrough

We walk the finished pool with you, confirm everything meets spec, and hand over care and warranty documentation in writing. This is also when we answer any questions about startup chemistry, equipment operation, and maintenance before you start using the pool day to day.

What can affect the timeline

A few things push a timeline longer than the typical range: additional DERM or drainage review, permit revisions requested by the city, weather delays during construction, holiday periods and vacations (which also delay work), and any mid-project design changes. We'll flag anything that's likely to affect your specific project at the design stage, not after it's already caused a delay.

The bottom line

We walk you through a real, project-specific timeline at your free site visit and put it in writing with your quote within the next 48 hours — not a generic range that doesn't account for your city, your lot, or your design. Ask us directly what to expect for your project; that's a question we're used to answering honestly.
