6 Questions to Ask Any Pool Builder Before You Hire
Getting three quotes and picking the lowest one is how a lot of homeowners shop for a pool builder — and it's how a lot of them end up with a project that stalls, a permit nobody can explain, or a "warranty" that turns out to be a verbal promise. These are the questions worth asking before you sign anything, whoever you're talking to.
1. Do you hold your own contractor license, or work under someone else's?
Not every company quoting pool construction is licensed under its own name — some operate under another contractor's license through a business arrangement you can't see into (here's why that matters). Ask directly, and ask to verify the license number on Florida's DBPR site. Ivero Pools holds its own Florida state licenses for residential (CPC1459549) and commercial (CPC1461349) work, held directly under the company's name — not borrowed from anyone.
2. Does the owner visit the site in person before quoting?
A quote based on photos or a phone call misses real conditions — access, drainage, grade, existing hardscape — that can change your price after the fact. At Ivero, the owner personally attends every first site visit, so the person who knows your actual backyard is the same person putting a number on it. Some things only surface once excavation starts; when they do, you should hear about them before the work happens, not on the final invoice.
3. Do you handle permitting in-house?
Permitting — city, county, and DERM or drainage review where it applies — is where projects quietly stall for months when nobody owns the process. We manage every permit in-house across Miami-Dade and Broward County, rather than leaving it to a separate permit expediter or, worse, to you.
4. What warranty do you put in writing — and for how long?
A verbal "don't worry about it" isn't a warranty. Ask for the actual terms, in writing, on the structure, the finish, and the equipment. Ivero puts its warranty terms in writing before you sign, not after something breaks, covering the structure, the finish and the equipment. Coverage depends on the scope and materials of the work, so specific conditions apply — ask for the exact terms for your project.
5. Is the price you're giving me a real number, or an estimate that can change?
"Somewhere around" isn't a price — it's a starting point for a conversation that can go anywhere once construction starts. You should get an exact price and timeline in writing after an in-person site visit, not a verbal ballpark you're expected to trust.
6. Do you offer financing, and how are payments structured?
If cost is a factor — and for most homeowners, it is — ask how payment is staged. Ivero offers no down payment financing through our lending partners, with payments staged to match construction progress, so you're paying for work that's actually been done. Here's how our financing works.
Ask these questions of anyone
You don't need to be a construction expert to ask any of this — you just need a builder willing to answer clearly and quickly. If a company hesitates on more than one of these, that's worth paying attention to before you sign, not after.
